"are you a boy or girl?" "sometimes."
hello! this page is about the basics of genderfluidity!
"are you a boy or girl?" "sometimes."
So, what exactly is genderfluidity?
Genderfluidity is a gender label or identity where the genderfluid person experiences different genders at different times, and is fluid between these genders. Another way to put this is that genderfluid people have a gender that continually changes, although how often their gender changes and what genders they experience is different for each genderfluid person.
For one simple example, one genderfluid person may identify as agender/genderless one day, a girl the next day, and genderqueer for a week before their gender changes back to being a girl. Another genderfluid person may only switch between being female and male, and their gender may change less frequently, like every few months. A genderfluid person can be fluid between any different gender identities, any number of gender identities, and their gender may change very often or more infrequently. It may fluctuate very unpredictably, or follow a pattern. Genderfluid people may also experience gender dysphoria when their gender does not align with their physical characteristics.
Genderfluidity is a real and valid gender identity that many people experience, and a few accounts of personal experiences of it are showcased under the "personal experiences" pages. Genderfluidity looks slightly different for everyone.
Although gender expression and presentation is not the same as gender identity, some genderfluid people change their clothes, accessories, labels, behavior, or pronouns based on their current genders. Some may wear makeup or use a different name to look and feel more feminine when their gender is female or feminine-aligned, as well as a pronoun pin to signify how they want to be referred to. For someone who's gender is occasionally nonbinary, they may prefer neutral terms during that time. Some genderfluid people may change their gender expression in a non-typical way, such as binding their chest even when their gender is female, wearing masculinizing or feminizing makeup when they are agender, or only changing one aspect of presentation but keeping the rest static. Other genderfluid people do not change the way they present themselves at all when their gender changes. Personal preference, as well as gender dysphoria and discomfort, can affect this.
To be respectful and kind towards a genderfluid person, just ask what they prefer, or ask what it means to them to be genderfluid. Everyone varies!
